Between today’s political spectrum and the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that is the current world of car design, I’m becoming increasingly convinced that we’re living in the darkest timeline.
At least we still have Mazda.

lol I like it :]

We are currently living in the greatest time to be an automotive enthusiast.

Darkest? That was the 1800s when everyone had carriages.

The 2016 Corolla I had as a rental a few weeks ago was fantastic, it got myself and everyone with me and all our things where we needed to go in a comfortable fashion. They may not be “enthusiast” cars but they’re good cars.
The only way cars today are the darkest timeline is if you shut yourself off from what’s good in the industry and make it dark yourself.

looks like you are back in those dark days.

Yes, Mazda, the company that produces engines that you can do almost nothing with! Because enthusiasts like keeping their cars stock, right? Especially when they are super high compression engines, that are designed with efficiency, not performanxe, in mind.

At least we still have Mazda.
The same Mazda who did this?

LOL Corolla is legend, i’ve always liked them

Yes, the ones who did
this
.

The 2016 is okay. It has grown on me. The 2017 is a tragic mess.

I was focusing on design, actually.

Below the 6, it isn’t really better. The 3 hatch looks like a cowering, abused dog.

I liked them then the 90s happened....
boring to look at, boring to drive since then. Don’t get me wrong, they are good cars, just boring.
![]() 03/24/2016 at 14:02 |

That may be true, but it seems like 90% of the new, production ready, affordable cars I see come out of the auto show circuit are chrome-trimmed piles of barf. Engineering is getting better, cars are getting faster, turbos are becoming more plentiful, but our current crop is simply an ugly mess. They might be fantastic to drive, but they’re hideous to look at.

I’ve liked many of them. This one I do not.

I disagree, but you can’t argue that it looks worse than
this
.

That was the 6000s BC, when no one had carriages.

They might be fantastic to drive
That’s an opinion I don’t really share. While modern cars surely are comfortable, they’re numb as well. Many people might even prefer numbness, I personally certainly don’t.
My mk3 Focus (diesel, manual, wagon) company car is the most comfortable car I drive frequenty. Yet, compared to the cars I own (16-29 years old) it’s the car I like driving the least.

boring cars do not exist :]

At least for the hatch, from the front quarter back, it very much does. It has the posture of a scared dog that has been beaten. You could just join a Mazda 3/ASPCA commercial together to save money. In the Arms of a Mazda - Feat. Mazda 3

Meh, I don’t see it.

The “might” was intentional. I’m too poor to drive newer cars, so I can’t confirm on the whole, but the few I’ve driven with electric steering have definitely felt numb. At least power is getting cheaper and more accessible.

says the guy who drives a BMW z3 and a Moose.

lol El Moose was a champ this weekend. Humble TX to McAllen TX in 5hr 35 min at 24.1 MPG.
But for reals dude, lots of fun could be had with any car :]

oh man I know exactly what you mean. I have an ‘03 Tiburon, from which I took out the power steering (reduced enough weight rendering it unnecessary). It is also manual transmission. I like driving a car that requires a little effort to drive it, rather than operate it. I recently had the chance to drive a coworker’s ‘12 Civic. That was the most difficult car I have ever driven because it was so easy. Absolutely zero effort is required to turn that steering wheel. I should not be able to turn a steering wheel full lock with a pinky finger while the car is stopped. IMO.

i’m not saying you have boring cars you have the opposite, and yes I know it’s possible to have fun in any car. but a corolla is boring to drive, boring to look at. Sure if you drive it like you stole it, it will be fun.
Sadly I spent many hours in corollas, and they are no way driver oriented cars. They are dependable like an appliance.
When I go on a road trip, the fun is driving there, but with a corolla, the fun is once you exit the car, or before you enter it.

Power without feedback is meaningless. To me it is at least. It’s great for overtaking on the German Autobahn, but elsewhere it’s overrated when it comes in a numb feeling vehicle.

All cars are appliances. My rental Crayola S was not bad. Way better driving than the clumsy wagon.
It’s all opinions and that’s all rad :p

Cars today will be used in a few years like 1970s cars were used in the late 90s...as engine donors, nothing more. Nobody will want the bodies, but we are living in an era of more HP per Liter than at any other time in history.
For example, I don’t think the rate at which K Swaps into 1990s Hondas are happening is going to slow down at all, but I also can’t see anybody lovingly restoring the 2007 Honda CRV that the K Series motor came out of in the future, either.
